Wooden Toys have always been something The Olive Branch Toy Shop is known for. There’s something so appealing in the look and feel of a beautiful wooden toy! Often chosen for special occasion gifts, they seem to have a universal charm that is hard to beat. But with so much choice out there, it can be a bit tricky to choose. Today, our team are discussing their favourites and what they look out for when choosing Top Wooden Toys.
One of the most charming things about wooden toys is their ability to inspire the imagination. The bricks that become a palace, the car that drives to a whole new world, the endless discovery of putting in the box and taking out of the box. We recommend looking for toys that are packed with play value or different opportunities and ways to play. The versatility of the Bigjigs Rail range is stunning – build a different track layout every time you play and there are so many additional tunnels, bridges, cranes and more to make your child’s set unique. Equally, we adore the beautiful Melissa & Doug Fold and Go Doll House and the Bigjigs Vet’s, Doctor’s and Vanity sets. We love that there is no prescribed way to play – play how you want to and combine with other favourite toys. It’s limitless, it’s excellent for development of key skills and it’s fun!
Whilst many of our bestselling wooden toys haven’t changed much in their design over the years, there are some that include the most mind-bogglingly clever new technology! The Hape Baby Einstein Magic Touch Piano is a perfect example. This wooden piano works with touch sensitive, keyless technology! It’s unbelievable! There are three ways to play, composing your own piece, following some written music and adding background accompaniments.
It is important to us to know that our wooden toys have been crafted from responsibly sourced and sustainable supplies. We are delighted to stock the new 100% FSC® Certified range from Bigjigs and some amazing bamboo products by Hape. We’ve been blown away by the new Hape Pallina Game – Julie remembers playing something similar as child. Same brilliant game play and eco-friendly too.
One thing wooden toys are renowned for is their fantastic durability. These toys are tough! They are easily capable of withstanding ten rounds of toddler playtime and still look fantastic. Here, simplicity is key. For our youngest explorers, we recommend choosing wooden toys that are chunky and easy to grab, build and stack with. Nothing too fancy or with fiddly edges that could get caught or present a safety worry. The classic Bigjigs Baby Walker and the Drum of Bricks are Kirsty’s favourites – brilliant to explore and creatively build towers, castles and more, placing and re-placing the different shapes and colours. Also very popular are our collection of Lanka Kade Animal figures. Suitable from 10+ months, these 25mm thick, chunky characters are wonderful for inspiring imaginative play and they are Fair Trade too!
Some toys stick around for good reason – they are simply great toys! Our Bigjigs Toys Snakes and Ladders set is a perfect example – bold, bright and beautifully designed, why mess with a winning formula! The same can be said of the Bigjigs Solitaire and Dominoes sets. These timeless, classics can be enjoyed over and over by the whole family. Katie fondly remembers looking forward to playing a game of dominoes at her Grandad’s house. Kept in a special toybox and played every Monday night! Aaaaawwwwww.
Whatever you choose, this fantastic collection of Top Wooden Toys are all beautifully designed, built to last and capable of being enjoyed through the generations. Enjoy!
